Scales of Stardust v1.2 - New level and mechanics!


Hey all!

v1.2 is out now and brings some major changes including:

  • A new movement mechanic that can be used throughout the game
  • An entire new level!
  • Polish to existing levels and features

Bunny hopping!

The new movement mechanic added to the game is bunny hopping! By using the scroll wheel just before landing from a jump, you will perform a bunny hop. When bunny hopping, you won't lose any horizontal speed so you can pair it with fling stars to perform very long jumps.

Bunny hopping will maintain your speed from fling stars.

Bunny hopping is not like regular jumping however as it won't refill your double/triple jump, since you're not on the ground for long enough. This makes the mechanic more of an advanced skill that should only be used in the right circumstances. It isn't required to beat the main game at all, but it will help you go faster and it feels awesome!


New level!

By completing the game, you can unlock a new, bonus level; The Floating Ruins! Climb though a tricky set of floating islands and ruined structures. The level brings new mechanics such as platforms that will fall almost instantly after you stand on them, wind that can be used to glide upwards and areas designed to test your bunny hopping skills.

To play this new level, you must have first finished the game. The button to start the new level will appear the next time you press "New Game" on the main menu. This level restricts you to basic movement, bunny hopping and gliding; You can't double or triple jump here.


Visual updates to existing levels

The fist level and parts of other levels have received a bit of polish. They no longer look and feel as empty.

The visual updates aren't exclusive to the first level. Other levels have been updated slightly.


Other changes

There are many minor changes and improvements in this update.

  • Fixed the cloud platforms in the third level sometimes disappearing when they shouldn't
  • Cloud platforms now have a respawn animation
  • Fixed text looking blocky at small resolutions
  • Pickup sounds for scales and feather
  • Pressing ESC will navigate backwards through menus
  • Huge reduction in filesize of the game (~71MB to ~48MB zip)
  • Updated credits screen to include new music.
  • Small fixes and tweaks that I've forgotten about...

The update is out now so feel free to give it a go! If you've played the game in the past, your save data should carry over with this update.
